THREE POEMS

John Zorn, Taipei Impromptu, 1995

A steamer
Sailing through the grottoes of the ear
Founders on the rocks

A tire
Barreling down the road is about to give a parked car
A rude awakening

A microphone
Forgotten beneath a traveler's pillow
The undiscovered source of the hubbub that kept the city up

A King Kong
On a high rise rooftop brushing his teeth
Prior to belting out a song

A tiny bird
Dragging an entire city
Into the sea

Translator’s note:

Hung Hung has a footnote to this poem that reads: “Written on the occasion of avant-garde musician John Zorn' s performance of an impromptu piece for chair, trumpet, and microphone, which soon cleared the theater of everyone who wasn't just a tad deranged.”
